Assistive Technology Program
The
Assistive Technology (AT) program was created in 1990 through a grant
from the U.S. Department of Education, National Institute on Disability
and Rehabilitation Research to the State of Alaska, Division of
Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR). Its purpose is to ensure all Alaskans have
the assistive technology and related services they need to live, work
and participate in their community.
DVR has selected Assitive Technology of Alaska (ATLA) as the primary provider of AT throughout the state.
Shift to Entrepeneurship Model
In
July of 1999 the AT program underwent a major shift in direction to a
social entrepeneurship model. This model provides services by:
- building local capacity statewide,
- meeting market needs,
- utilizing existing funding sources wherever possible, and
- creating systems change to open new markets and funding sources.
The Goal: A Sustainable System of AT Services Across Alaska
Through this grant, and in coordination with the AT Advisory Committee, ATLA is developing a statewide AT system to provide a more effective way for consumers to access AT throughout Alaska.
