ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG)
This one-day course provides the most current accessibility standards and how to apply them in design, construction, and maintenance phases for new and existing facilities. People who work in facilities management, architecture, planning, and building maintenance can benefit from this training, but it is also suitable for businesses, program management, and civil rights compliance. This course is designed to provide participants with the basic knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG). Participants will have basic knowledge of building codes, pedestrian facilities, public accommodations, and special programs. Participants will learn how to interpret and implement the ADAAG to remove architectural barriers during facility alterations, remodels and maintenance. This course is free and open to all state employees and the public.
Upon completion of this one-day course, participants will have knowledge of:
- The basis for and how to use the accessibility guidelines for the ADA, including new architectural standards, client offices and programs
- How to conduct an accessibility survey
- State and federal legal sources for civil rights and facility access
- Online resources and training materials.
- Special programs that assist in coordinating access
ADA Basics for Supervisors (ADAB)
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) continues to be one of the most crucial civil rights laws affecting employment. Managers and supervisors are increasingly called upon to make decisions involving employees with medical needs and/or disabilities. This training will help participants handle fact-specific issues that will require their time and attention to ensure compliance. This half-day course is current with the latest court decisions on the ADA. This course is free and open to all state employees and the public.
Upon completion of this half-day course, participants will have knowledge of:
- When a medical condition requires an ADA response
- How to conduct a reasonable accommodation interview
- The impact of recent ADA court decisions on employment
- Specific issues such as:
- Service animals
- Enrollment eligibility
- Hiring practices
- How to make your service environment inclusive of persons with disabilities
ADA Refresher (ADAR)
This half-day course updates participants on disability rights and provides tools to promote access and compliance. Alaska seeks to provide the most modern, accessible government for people with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) continues to be interpreted, and new organizations continually improve disability tools and resources. Participants will review the ADA “how to think” process and reasonable accommodation, state and national disability trends, current selected case law, tools, and standards. This course is free and open to all state employees and the public.
Upon completion of this half-day course, participants will have knowledge of:
- State and national disability rights trends, activities and events
- The ADA “how to think” process
- The interactive process of reasonable accommodation
- Selected case law updates on employment and accessibility issues
ADA Windmills (ADAW)
This fun, one-day course explores perceptions of disability as part of the human experience. Each segment challenges participants about an aspect of disability, and how it might affect the work and service environment. Participants will acquire a renewed view of disability, and the appropriate behaviors that will enable them to promote a more meaningful and inclusive working environment. This course is free and open to all state employees and the public.
Upon completion of this one-day course, participants will have knowledge of:
- Perceptions of different abilities, and how to enrich personal interactions
- Effective, meaningful and respectful communications
- The interactive process of reasonable accommodation
- Tools for inclusiveness that expand awareness beyond the workshop
